Aquarian Cinematic produces film and television that centers characters the industry too often sidelines—queer people and older people navigating messy, complicated, extraordinary lives. Our stories live in heightened realities grounded in emotional truth: dark comedies, psychological thrillers, and character-driven drama where the protagonists are going through it and coming out transformed on the other side.
Founded by writer-producer Peter Salvatore Petralia, the company draws on twenty years of international production experience across four continents, a deep network of European and North American collaborators, and the conviction that the most compelling stories come from voices that have spent a lifetime on the outside looking in.
Aquarian Cinematic is based in Nanaimo, BC, Canada on the stolen homelands of the Snuneymuxw First Nations. We are committed to being in solidarity with Indigenous Sovereignties on their own terms.
Overhand
A closeted boxer confronts the violent costs of living a lie—in and out of the ring—when a brutal title fight leaves his homophobic rival in a coma and threatens to expose the truth he’s hidden from the world, his family, and himself.
Overhand is a story about the price of silence. It follows a championship-caliber fighter who has built his entire public life around a performance of masculinity while hiding the person he actually loves. When violence in the ring collides with the violence of the closet, he's forced to choose between the career he's sacrificed everything for and the truth that could set him free—or destroy him. The film sits at the intersection of sports drama and queer cinema, in the tradition of Moonlight and Creed.
